Linux at NC State

What gets installed

Since the majority of the software packages that are available on a Realm Linux workstation will be detailed later, I won't waste the time to make an exhaustive list here. In short, the base OS (Red Hat Linux) is installed with between 10 and 15 additional NCSU-specific packages that allow access to NCSU network resources such as kerberos, Hesiod, and AFS. These packages also customize the base install in presentation-specific ways such as changing the background for the graphical login screen. Most other software available at NCSU is not actually installed on the machine itself, but rather is accessed through AFS lockers.
