Automatic Updating

As of version 8.0 of the Realm Linux, Updating is enabled by default in any standard Realm Linux installation. This is to ensure that Realm Kit machines are updated regularly and are not exposed to security vulnerabilities for extended periods of time.

[Note]Note

Red Hat Enterprise Linux based versions of Realm Linux must be registered with the Red Hat Network to receive updates. Please see the section on regitration.

If you wish to update on a manual basis, you should run as root up2date which will get the list of currently available updates and then ask if updating them is okay.

Up2date can also be used to install extra packages that come with Realm Linux and has many features. See the man pages for up2date to learn about all the bells and whistles.

Up2date is set to automatically run every night. However, you can use realmconfig and chose the Automatic Updates configuration option to turn automatic updates on or off.

[Warning]Warning

Turning off automatic updates is highly dangerous and will compromise the security of your Realm Linux workstation. Do not turn off the automatic updater.

Up2date will run nightly and update your machine at some time between 12 am and 7 am. Note that occasionally, a package update will send mail to root due to output during the update process. This is somewhat normal. To get notification of updates before they are released, please subscribe to the realmlinux-announce mailing list (highly recommended)

There are two sets of packages that require special attention which are the kernel and OpenAFS packages. By default these will be ignored by up2date as they have the possibility of disrupting the machine's normal operations. To upgrade the kernel and OpenAFS packages you will need to run up2date manually and select those packages from the graphical user interface or, from the command line, use the -f option to up2date.
